Plastering over artex is a popular technique used to transform textured surfaces into smooth finishes.
Artex is a textured coating applied to ceilings and walls in the past, can be challenging to remove due to its composition , there is also a potential presence of asbestos in older installations.
Instead of dealing with the laborious task of scraping off the artex, plastering over it offers a practical solution.
We prepare the surface Skilled by cleaning, priming, and applying a base coat to ensure proper adhesion. Then, a layer of plaster is applied, creating a seamless finish. This process covers over the outdated texture and also provides a blank canvas for painting or further decorative treatments, resulting in a refreshed and modern appearance to any room.
Skimming and floating are used to create a flawless, smooth finish to a surface.
Skimming involves applying a thin layer of plaster over an existing surface, such as a wall or ceiling, to create a smooth, even finish. This technique is commonly used when the surface is in good condition and requires only minor repairs or leveling.
Floating, is the term used to level a rough / more uneven surface. It involves applying a thicker layer of plaster to the surface and then using a trowel or float to smooth out any lumps, bumps or imperfections.
Floating is typically used when the surface requires more extensive repairs or leveling.
A variety of plaster materials can be used, such as cement, lime, or gypsum plaster. The choice of plaster will depend on the specific requirements of the job and the condition of the surface that requires plastering.
Our team are very experienced in both techniques to enable us to carry out flawless plaster work.
Dot and Dab Drylining, - also called drylining, is a quick and efficient method of interior wall construction. Plasterboard sheets are fixed directly onto masonry or blockwork wall using adhesive, without the need for wet plastering.
The wall surface is cleaned and any loose debris is removed. Using a notched trowel, adhesive is applied in small dots to the wall, ensuring a consistent spread of adhesive is applied. The plasterboard sheets are then pressed onto the adhesive.
Dot and dab is generally quicker to do compared to traditional wet plastering methods. Drylining can be completed much more quickly and with less mess. This makes it suited to projects with tight deadlines or where disruption needs to be kept to a minimum.

General Questions
Some questions we get asked often, Find the answers below.
We will do all the prep work for you.
Our team will clean the walls/ ceiling to remove any loose plaster, wallpaper, dust and grease.
For a freshly completed wall, it can take 1 week to dry properly. How quickly the plaster dries depends on a few factors - the number of layers of plaster and the thickness of each layer.
Sagging ceilings often require professional repair work as they may indicate a more significant underlying issue, such as structural damage or water leakage. At Prolan Plastering we will assess the cause and implement the appropriate repair method.
We offer the following types of plaster,
Clay plaster
Gypsum (plaster of paris)
Lime
Cement
Heat resistant.
Any new plaster will need to be primed before any paint is applied- ie a layer of primer is applied first.
This will seal in the surface, so you get the disired colour of paint.
Lath and plaster is often found in older houses. it used to be a traditional technique used for wall construction and finishing that dates back centuries.
It involved the application of multiple layers of materials.
Wooden or metal laths - thin strips of material that are nailed horizontally across the wall studs. Plaster, a mixture of sand, lime, and water, was then applied over the laths in several coats.
The first coat, known as the scratch coat, filled in the gaps between the laths, providing a base for subsequent layers. The second coat, the brown coat, was used to add thickness and strength to the wall, while the final coat, the finish coat, was applied for a smooth and polished appearance.
We dont use this as a technique any more but can repair and re plaster over lath and plaster.
Our work is guaranteed for 12 months - not against accidental damage, fire or flood.
Minor water damage on a ceiling can sometimes be repaired by fixing the source of the water, allowing the ceiling to dry, and then patching and painting the damaged area. However, extensive water damage may require professional assistance to ensure thorough drying and proper restoration.
To minimize ceiling cracks reoccurring, you must address any underlying issues causing the cracks, such as foundation settling or moisture problems. Additionally, consider using flexible joint compounds and ensuring proper ventilation to reduce temperature and humidity fluctuations.
We can generally repair most wall and ceiling cracks unless they are extensive.
The time duration for plastering work depends on the size and complexity of the project.
For smaller rooms or areas, it can be completed within a day or two.
Ceiling may be able to be repaired, if they need to be replaced we can work out the best price for you. No pushy sales talk! we will come out and quote you in person to give you the best price possible.
